WELCOME TO SARASOTA NEIGHBORHOODS

Here are some great neighborhoods we would like to bring to your attention.  They include Sarasota, Palmer Ranch, Lakewood Ranch, Lido Key, Bird Key, St Armands and Siesta Key.

BIRD KEY

Sporting deep water canals, its own private yacht club and spectacular bayfront homes—many with their own deep water dockage—to call Bird Key a boater’s paradise is an understatement. Bird Key is all this, and much more.

Today’s Bird Key is a fashionable island neighborhood with sparkling vistas that begin at sunrise and end with blazing sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico. At night, the expansive Sarasota skyline glistens to life across a shimmering expanse of Sarasota Bay.

In the early 1920’s, circus entrepreneur John Ringling purchased Bird Key as part of his ambitious plans to develop the magnificent strand of barrier islands that include Lido and Longboat Keys. He built the first Ringling Causeway for easy access to and from the Keys, St. Armands Circle and downtown Sarasota. The newest causeway, no longer a draw-bridge, opened in January of 2004 and is a study in sleek contemporary design and convenience.

Numbered among Bird Key’s current residents are professionals of every stripe, including doctors, attorneys, entrepreneurs and celebrities. They live in impressive new homes or spectacular renovations of Bird Key’s original homes.

CASEY KEY

Casey Key is a spectacularly lush barrier island 15 miles south of Sarasota. Named for Captain John Charles Casey—an English-born army officer who graduated from West Point with General Robert E. Lee—Casey Key stretches from Siesta Key on the north to the Island of Venice at its southernmost tip, allowing boaters and fishermen easy access to the Gulf of Mexico. The majority of the island is a conservation district, established in the early 1970s by the Florida State Legislature. Casey Key has matured well, its charm being its single greatest attraction.

Residential real estate opportunities consist almost entirely of single-family homes and opulent waterfront estate homes. Visitors and residents enjoy the beaches and recreational opportunities on the island. Shore-side activities include volleyball, picnicking and simply soaking up the sun and scenery. Fishing is also a beloved activity.

LONGBOAT KEY

As much an international destination as it is a beloved favorite among visitors and residents from all over the U.S., Longboat Key’s span crosses through both Sarasota and Manatee Counties. This magnificent length of shoreline got its first road courtesy of circus magnate John Ringling in 1925. Originally, it extended only from New Pass at the southernmost tip to the Manatee County line, but Ringling envisioned a beautifully landscaped boulevard that would run the full length of the barrier island.

Today’s Gulf of Mexico Drive is the magnificently landscaped thoroughfare that Ringling had imagined to run the full length of Longboat Key. It winds past splendid homes and condominiums, lush greenways and parks, hidden driveways and side streets, yacht basins and captivating stretches of the Gulf of Mexico. Along both sides are discreet shopping plazas—filled with upscale shopping and fine dining—and the emerald-shaded fairways that comprise the two championship courses of Longboat Key Club

Noted as much for its thriving arts and cultural scene as for its tropical beauty, neighborhood pot luck dinners and numerous social activities, Longboat Village is a community in the purest sense of the word.

Most home sites are waterfront, with canals or direct frontage on Sarasota Bay. Of those homes located away from the water, most enjoy superb views of the Bay. Homes range in style from Florida Ranch and Key West to contemporary designs, all maintaining that classic Florida feel.

COUNTRY CLUB SHORES - Originally opened in the early 1960s, this classic waterfront community is one of the most sought-after locations on Longboat Key. Developed in five phases, Country Club Shores is one of the few single-family neighborhoods on this prestigious barrier island. With its deep water canals opening to a shimmering expanse of Sarasota Bay, this is a rare opportunity to park your boat in the backyard and join the privileged few who call this vintage neighborhood home.

The architecture in Country Club is decidedly “old Florida,” with the majority of single-story homes on canals with private docks and davits. Many of the older residences have been restored or replaced and homes that front the bay offer sweeping views of the ever-changing Sarasota skyline.

OSPREY

Judge John G. Webb of Utica, New York was the first man to settle in the area he later named Osprey, after the large bird that nests in the loftiest branches of the town’s indigenous pines, live oaks and gumbo limbo trees. The Osprey Post Office was established in 1884 with Webb as its first postmaster.

Today’s Osprey, located on Little Sarasota Bay, is a thriving community with abundant residential opportunities. Osprey is noteworthy for being the site selected in 1910 by Bertha Honore Palmer, widow of Chicago magnate Potter Palmer and an early Sarasota visionary, for her winter estate and gardens.

At Spanish Point, site of the estate, she designed elaborate gardens while preserving early pioneer dwellings and the remains of the area’s prehistoric past. Historic Spanish Point remained in the Palmer family until 1980, when the site was donated to Gulf Coast Heritage Association.

Osprey is also home to Oscar Scherer State Park, 1,384 acres of pine and scrub flatwoods located on the banks of a small tidal creek. The park offers canoeing, a swimming lake, campgrounds, nature trails, bicycle paths and picnic areas.

Add to this an unparalleled Gulf Coast setting, a bustling economy with a huge philanthropic heart, and a cultural scene of astonishing breadth, and you’ll understand why Sarasota has etched itself on the heart of so many newcomers from everywhere in the world and every walk of life.

Residential opportunities in Sarasota are as varied as its people, proudly showing off the same colorful and eclectic mix. Styles vary, but most reflect traditional or Spanish styles and nearly every home has been impressively remodeled to preserve the special character of the lovely neighborhood. For young professionals and families who appreciate the convenience of downtown living, Cherokee Park is one of the most popular places to call home.

DOWNTOWN SARASOTA - A city teeming with live theater. An internationally-acclaimed opera house and art museum. A soul-stirring symphony and soaring ballet. Fabulous places to dine as a prelude—or postscript—to a night on the town.

New York? Maybe. Except, throw in a challenging round of golf in the morning, a powdery white beach in the afternoon and a blazing sunset over the Gulf of Mexico to launch an evening’s worth of exciting possibilities. This all adds up to SarasotaFlorida’s “Suncoast” and cultural capital—where days begin at the water’s edge and spill into downtown after dark..

Downtown Sarasota can be anything you want it to be. It’s the tree-shaded esplanade of Main Street—filled with shops, restaurants, cafes, and gourmet food stores. It’s a morning’s jog along the bayfront, lunch beneath the banyans at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and afternoon high tea sipped in grand style at the Ritz-Carlton. It’s a daylong fishing charter that glides from its bayside slip; or a sunny morning stroll amid fresh produce and other open-air delights at each Saturday’s Farmers’ Market..

Residential opportunities are equally eclectic, possessing the same unique blend of possibilities. GOLDEN GATE - Once known simply as Cedar Point, it’s easy to see why this tiny 22-acre peninsula—that juts into Sarasota Bay—eventually earned the name Golden Gate Point. Much has been done over the years to improve what ultimately became the storied gateway to John Ringling’s resort communities on St. Armand’s, Lido and Longboat Keys. Each time a new causeway was built to link Sarasota with these barrier islands, the span would originate from this previously undeveloped stretch of land.

With the magnificent Ritz-Carlton Hotel as its new neighbor, today’s Golden Gate Point is the address for some of the city’s most impressive new residential offerings. SIESTA KEY

In the late 1800’s, Siesta Key was variously called Clam Island, Sarasota Key or Little Sarasota Island, depending on which map you looked at. Early Siesta Key was a beautiful, but hostile, environment—inhabited mainly by wildcats and wild boars. Settling here meant a life of hardscrabble survival for those who dared to tame its challenging landscape.

Early settlers, it turns out, were not initially attracted to the natural beauty of the Key and its surrounding waters. They came merely to raise crops in harsh sandy soil that gave very little back. They came because it was the only available property that hadn’t been deeded away to land speculators.

Today’s Siesta Key will captivate you the moment you step onto its world-famous powdery white beaches. From sunrise to sunset, Siesta Key's displays its unsurpassed beauty to thousands of residents and tourists throughout the year. Visionary circus magnate John Ringling purchased St. Armands Key in 1917 and planned a development that included residential lots and a shopping center laid out in a circle. His crews labored at dredging canals, building seawalls, and installing sidewalks and streets lined with rose-colored curbs. In 1925, work began on a causeway to link St. Armands Key with the mainland.

One year later, the John Ringling Causeway and Ringling Estates development opened to the public, with Ringling himself leading a parade across the causeway. His circus band played in the center of the Circle even as free bus service brought prospective buyers and sightseers from downtown Sarasota to the Key.

Today, stylish residential neighborhoods are just steps from the famed shopping district and the azure shores of Lido Beach.
